Making the I AM YOU Family
Ten tracks, one drawing. Inside the artwork for All Of Us 001: listening on repeat, drawing with the music, studio films and all ten track previews.
A record can bring people together before it ever reaches a dance floor. For All Of Us 001, that meeting happens in the artwork too: ten tracks from the I AM YOU family feeding into one drawing by Ole Ukena.
Music by Deer Jade, KADI (IL), Yonadav, Julia Sandstorm, SAAND, Robbie Akbal, Nicaré, METAFLORE, Nina Hepburn, BROLORIZO, Alma Linda and Gidal.
For this compilation, he worked through all ten tracks with the same drawing in progress. Each piece of music contributed something to the shared image.
In Ole’s words
“Take what you’re given, add something, pass it on.”
I don't arrive with a plan. I put on a track and draw what I hear. Improv has a rule for it: yes, and. Take what you're given, add something, pass it on. All ten tracks are in this drawing. Every one of them left something on the canvas.
That's how we work here in general. Crosspollinating music and art, artwork and dancefloor, listening to each other and seeing what comes out.

On repeat
The test of listening again.
Drawing takes time. For Ole, that means living with the tracks through repeated listening, with his attention moving between the music and the image. Familiarity becomes a useful test: does a track begin to grate after another play, or does it keep pulling him back?
Each track brings something different to the compilation. The drawing gives those individual contributions a shared home.

Behind the cover
Drawing, dancing, making.
The studio film follows the drawing and dancing that went into the cover; the time-lapse shows how the image took shape.
Beyond the sleeve
A world around the record.
The work continues beyond the album cover. Its colours and forms carry into the release material, giving the music a visual world to inhabit. The finished artwork is one view of that world; the individual track films let it move.
